Making Tax Time Effortless: Custom Mobile App for RSM Australia

The Challenge

RSM Australia is one of the country's leading accounting and advisory firms, serving clients across both the private and public sector. With over 1,200 staff nationally and a presence in 120 countries, RSM needed a way to make tax time simpler for their clients.

The problem was familiar to anyone who has scrambled to find receipts in April: clients were losing track of deductible expenses throughout the year, manually logging business trips, and arriving at tax time without the records their accountant needed. This created unnecessary back-and-forth, delayed returns, and a frustrating experience for both clients and advisors.

RSM wanted a mobile app that would capture receipts on the go, log business trips automatically via GPS, keep data secure on the user's device, and give users full control over what gets shared and with whom.

Technowand's Approach

Technowand designed and developed a custom iOS and Android app from the ground up, working closely with RSM to balance simplicity with functionality. The brief was clear: simple but effective. RSM's brand is built on making complex financial services feel approachable, and the app needed to reflect that.

Core Features Built

Receipt Manager — photograph receipts, categorise by expense type, and store securely on-device. Organised by financial year for easy retrieval at tax time.

GPS Trip Logger — automatic trip recording with distance calculation. No manual odometer readings or spreadsheet entries.

Tax Calculators — income tax, GST, loan repayment, superannuation contribution optimiser, lifetime super contribution tracker, Centrelink calculator, and currency converter.

Event Portal — upcoming RSM seminars and events with registration details.

Data Privacy by Design

A key architectural decision was keeping all data on the user's device. The app does not require a connection to RSM's infrastructure, and users are not required to be RSM clients to use it. This gives users full control over their information and removes any concern about data being stored on third-party servers.

Results

App launched December 2019 on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
